The PLM Supreme Student Council (SSC) conducted the long-awaited “Ilanglang Haribon: A Freshie Welcoming Event” more than a month after its initial schedule at the University Activity Center and Tanghalang Bayan, Oct. 9.
To introduce and welcome the freshmen to the university, different activities were held, such as a campus tour, a welcoming walk, team-building games, and a culminating concert featuring performances from guest performers Lukawayy, Taylor Sweep, Rey Cariaso, Monica Intervention, and the Magwayen Creative Scholar’s Guild.
PLM SSC President Margarette Madrid expressed gratitude to the students, professors, and administrators for their continued anticipation for the event despite its initial delay. She also recalled an encounter with a freshman student, noting the university’s lack of yearly traditions such as the Paskuhan.
“Mayroong isang freshie na nag-approach sa’kin and then nag-ask siya kung paano raw yung tradition dito sa PLM. But to be honest, I had a hard time answering kasi, for example, sa other universities meron silang Paskuhan, ganun. But I couldn’t think of anything but only the people here sa university, which makes the college life more bearable and enjoyable,” she said during the opening remarks.
Madrid also added that while PLM is known as a place of learning and topping the board, she assured the freshmen that it is also a place where they can find a community that would support them and forge genuine friendships.
The said event, dedicated to welcoming the freshmen PLMayers, was spearheaded by the SSC in collaboration with the other college student councils and partner organizations within the university.
The welcoming event, which was originally set to be conducted last Aug. 20, was rescheduled when Taal Volcano erupted. It was then moved to Sept. 10 but was postponed once again due to internal conflicts with the PLM Office of Student Development and Services (OSDS).
